We have just opened up the registration page for players who wish to try out for one of our Rep or Select teams. Both programs are open for any St. Catharines resident to participate, and encouraged!  Tryouts are also FREE.

*Non-residents are welcome to try out, but must obtain an official release from their home association (e.g., GNBA, Grimsby, Beamsville, Welland, Pelham, Fort Erie) prior to taking the field or being rostered.

TRYOUTS SCHEDULE

The Rep and Select Tryouts dates and times for 8U to 18U are still being determined, however, you can plan that they will begin the first weekend of September. As soon as we confirm diamond availability we will email the information to you and post on our website.

How do tryouts work?

There will be three tryouts offered for every grouping. (8/9U, 10/11U etc.) Players will be required to attend a minimum of two tryouts. Selection for Rep will be made by the head coach who will contact those successful in the tryout.

Those players not successful for Rep, will have the opportunity to participate in Select baseball (if we have sufficient numbers).  Select players will also be able to participate in scheduled off-season training.

What qualifications do the coaches have?

All SCMBA coaches are required to have National Coaching Certification as specified by Baseball Ontario for their age group. The coaches take additional training in concussion protocols, and emergency procedures.

How many players per team - Rep and Select?

This depends on the age group, but typically teams have between 12 and 15 players. It is at the coaches discretion to determine the appropriate amount of players.

What does 'Rep' mean?

Rep Baseball is our highest level of competition.  Rep teams compete against other communities' rep teams from around the Niagara District. These are typically the best baseball players in the region, and therefore competition amongst players for a spot on the roster can be, at times, very intense.  We believe that a healthy competition is good for both the individual and the team.  It inspires top performance and, in the appropriate environment, will allow the player to thrive on rising to the level of competition required and will test their skills against the very best players.

What does 'Select' mean? 

The Select Program is an extension of House League and provides a great opportunity to those House League players who are looking for additional baseball and development opportunities. Therefore, all Select players MUST register for the House League program in order to qualify for Select. Select is a great launching pad to get into our Rep Program, which is our highest level of baseball.

Select players benefit from additional practices with trained coaches, and will have some opportunities for regular exhibition games against other association select teams.. Furthermore, our Select teams also participate Tournaments where they compete with other Select teams from across the province. When does the season start and end?

Our Rep teams play in the Niagara District Baseball Association (NDBA) Loop which begins the second week of May, and goes until Labour Day weekend.

What does the off-season look like?

Rep teams typically begin off season training in February or March, with usually 1 day per week and gradually ramping up to the beginning of the season. However, training schedules are determined by the coaches in consultation with families.

How often do we play games and practice?

Rep teams typically play 2 games (1 home 1 away), and 1 or 2 practices during the week. Games are versus NDBA teams which means travel isn’t far.

Games are usually scheduled Monday to Thursday to allow for teams to participate in tournaments on the weekend.

How many tournaments do you play a season?

Rep teams play in 3 or 4 tournaments plus the OBA Provincial tournament (if qualified). Head coaches will select the tournaments in January and communicate to families so there is plenty of time to plan for those weekend tournaments.

How much does it cost to play Rep/Select baseball?

There is quite a wide range depending on a few factors.  Many teams have been successful at fundraising and lowering their cost significantly.

The costs include diamond/umps, indoor facilities, tournaments fees, equipment, OBA/NDBA fees, uniforms, and some other miscellaneous.

Typically $800-1000 per season

The St. Catharines Minor Baseball Association Rep program is a non-profit association.  We provide baseball and affordable cost, and have programs available to help all interested players enjoy baseball.
